Marangu Route 5- Days Itinerary
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be greeted by a Maranje Adventures representative and transferred to the hotel as part of the package. The hotel offers all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay, including cozy rooms, hot water, friendly staff, a swimming pool, and internet access. In the evening, there will be a briefing conducted by our team to ensure you are well-prepared to begin the climb.
For private tour packages, shared airport transfers are included for your group, with additional charges applicable for individual transfers. To avoid extra expenses, it is recommended to coordinate arrival and departure times within your group.
Your climbing guide and support team will meet you at your hotel for a brief orientation before departing for Kilimanjaro Park's Eastern Gate: Marangu, situated at 1,970 meters (6,462 feet) above sea level. Once the climbing permits are registered with the rescue and search services, you'll commence your ascent to Mandara Hut at 2,720 meters (8,922 feet).Given the likelihood of rain in the tropical rainforest along the trail, it's highly advisable to bring a raincoat. Upon reaching Mandara Hut, lunch will be provided, and accommodations for the night will be assigned.
Please note the following recommendations for your first day at this altitude:
Consume over 4 liters of bottled water daily in small, frequent intervals.
Consider using preventive measures such as high-altitude medication to alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness. Your itinerary will include further details, and it's advisable to consult your doctor beforehand regarding any allergies or health concerns.
Nighttime discomfort due to reduced oxygen levels is common, often resulting in nausea and headaches. Inform your guide if you experience any symptoms.
Trekking Time: 5-7 hours
Distance: 11 km
Your group will have an early morning breakfast at Mandara Hut before embarking on a moderate hike towards the second high-altitude camp: Horombo Hut, located at 3,720 meters (12,204 feet) above sea level. Upon reaching Horombo Hut, you'll be treated to stunning views of two volcanoes: Kibo and Mawenzi.
After lunch, you'll undertake an acclimatization hike towards Kibo Hut, gaining an altitude of 200 meters (656 feet), before returning to Horombo Hut for dinner.
It's important to note that the acclimatization hike is a crucial part of the process to help your body adjust to the altitude. These hikes significantly enhance your chances of successfully reaching the summit and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
Acclimatization Hike:
Change in Elevation:
Horombo Hut (3,720 m / 12,204 f) to Destination point en route to Kibo Hut (3,920 m / 12,861 f)
Hiking Distance: 2.5 km
Hiking Time: 1-2 hours
Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
Distance: 10 km
After breakfast, you'll embark on an acclimatization hike towards Kibo Hut and return to the camp. Following lunch, you'll have the option to explore the surrounding area, capture photos of Mawenzi Volcano, or rest before the upcoming trek to Kibo Hut. To facilitate acclimatization, your team will spend the night at the same altitude at Horombo Hut camp.
Acclimatization Hike:
Change in Elevation:
Horombo Hut (3,720 m / 12,205 f) to Destination point en route to Kibo Hut (4,500 m / 14,763 f)
Hiking Distance: 5-8 km
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Following breakfast, the group will trek to Kibo Hut (4,720 m /15,482 ft). The trek itself is relatively moderate, but it's important to maintain a suitable pace to conserve energy for the summit climb. Upon arrival at the camp, lunch will be provided, and it's advisable to rest as much as possible, avoid strenuous activities, and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
Trekking Time: 4–8 hours
Distance: 10 km
Your group will commence the ascent from Kibo Hut (4,720 m/15,482 ft) to Kilimanjaro's summit, Uhuru Peak (5,895 m/19,336 ft), during the night. Although this segment of the Marangu Route isn't technically challenging, the high altitude makes even regular physical exertion feel demanding.
For the final summit push, climbers are paired with a guide, who will monitor their well-being and provide support and encouragement throughout the ascent.
Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, climbers have the option to descend to the nearest glacier if desired. Subsequently, you'll return to Kibo Camp for a two-hour rest before continuing the descent to Horombo Hut (3,720 m / 12,202 ft).
Please Note: Approximately 90% of mountain accidents, including broken limbs, occur during the descent. However, these can be easily avoided by exercising caution and being mindful of your footing.
Trekking Time: 9-12 hours
Distance: 16 km
After enjoying a hearty breakfast in the morning, we will proceed towards the exit of Kilimanjaro National Park: Marangu Gate (1,970 m /6,462 ft). Upon completing the descent, the entire group will gather to celebrate your achievement, and you'll have the opportunity to share your thoughts on the journey in the guestbook. Finally, commemorative certificates will be presented to you before arranging a transfer back to your hotel.
Trekking Time: 5-6 hours
Distance: 18 km
Relax at the hotel and arrange transportation to the airport.
Note: Hotel check-out is scheduled for 11:00 AM. If your flight is in the evening and you require a late check-out, it's possible to extend your hotel stay for an additional fee.

Marangu Route Kilimanjaro FAQ
The Marangu Route offers two itinerary options: one spanning 5 days and the other 6 days. The 6-day variation presents a moderately challenging trek, whereas the 5-day Marangu route is advised for experienced individuals with prior high-altitude experience or good acclimatization.
The Marangu route is famed as the oldest pathway on Mount Kilimanjaro and the sole route where camping is not required, thanks to its well-known hut accommodations. An interesting tidbit: our acquaintance Alexis Peltier once successfully landed a plane near Kibo Hut along the Marangu route.
The Marangu 6-day route presents a moderate level of difficulty suitable for various climbers. However, its 5-day counterpart is notably more challenging and is not advisable for beginners. Typically, the most demanding segment of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is the summit day in the high-altitude desert. Longer itineraries offer better acclimatization opportunities, making the summit day more feasible to tackle.
Approximately 84% of hikers with Maranje adventureTravel on the Marangu 5-day itinerary and 87% on the 6-day itinerary successfully reach the summit, which is notably high compared to historical data or other tour operators. Nevertheless, longer 7-day itineraries on different routes may provide even higher summit success rates.
