Our Tipping Policy

The amount and method of tipping may vary depending on the duration and complexity of your trek, the size of your group, and the number of staff members involved. Generally, climbers like to meet as a group towards the end of their trek to discuss and agree on the tip distribution based on their personal experience with the team.

After your trek, you will be provided with an envelope at the Maranje Adventures office to organize and distribute your tip money.

General Tipping Principles
  • Performance-Based Tips: Tips should reflect the professionalism and dedication of your guides and porters, not solely whether you summited Mount Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru.
  • Concerns About Service: If you feel your expectations weren’t met, inform the Maranje Adventures management at the office immediately. You should not feel obligated to tip if service is substandard.
  • No Pressuring for Tips: If a team member requests a tip during your trek, notify Maranje Adventures management, as this goes against company policy.
Where and When to Tip
  • Avoid Tipping on the Mountain: Tips should only be given at the Maranje Adventures office after the trek. Avoid paying tips or fees for extra services on the mountain unless purchasing refreshments (available only on the Marangu Route).
  • Non-Monetary Gifts: Clothing or footwear (new or used) for children or adults are highly valued and can be given alongside monetary tips.
  • Additional Gestures: Consider inviting your guides to share a drink or meal at the Maranje Adventures office as a thank-you, in addition to monetary tips.

You may tip using US dollars, Euros, Tanzanian Shillings, or a combination of these currencies.
