Mount Kilimanjaro Day trip
Trip Overview
The day trip to Mount Kilimanjaro begins around 5:00 AM from Moshi, or even earlier, to bypass traffic. Depending on your hotel’s location, the journey to the mountain takes approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours. After an early breakfast, you’ll set off with your guide to Kilimanjaro National Park to commence the Kilimanjaro day hike.
The hike starts on the western side of the mountain, ascending through lush montane forests to Londorossi Gate at an altitude of 2,100 meters. From here, the trek continues upward, gaining over 1,000 meters of elevation. The route winds through tropical forests teeming with wildlife. With your guide’s expertise, you may encounter colobus monkeys, crested turacos, and other unique species. Occasionally, the deep rumble of elephants resonates through the forest, and you might even catch glimpses of them through the dense vegetation.
The hike culminates at the expansive Shira Plateau, perched at 3,600 meters. This 500,000-year-old volcanic caldera, now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers breathtaking vistas. You may pause for lunch on the plateau or proceed further to explore Shira 1 Camp, Lion Gorge, and the foothills of the Shira Pinnacles. From this vantage point, you’ll be rewarded with views of Kilimanjaro’s iconic snow-clad summit, Kibo Peak, as well as the neighbouring glaciers.
Fitness Requirements
While it may be “just” a day hike, the rapid pace and significant altitude gain make this trek physically demanding. It’s not a walk in the park—be prepared for a challenge. Do not underestimate the effort required, as the combination of steep inclines and high elevation can be exhausting.
What to Wear
Proper footwear is paramount. Sturdy, closed hiking shoes are essential for the Kilimanjaro day hike. While attempting the climb in inappropriate footwear, like high heels, may be amusing to imagine, it’s not recommended—unless you’re prepared to face discomfort without complaint.
Given the altitude, bringing an extra layer of warm clothing is strongly advised. The lower rainforest can also be damp, so waterproof gear or a dry bag with spare socks and a shirt is highly recommended to ensure your comfort during the hike.
